Importance of adding sodium tripolyphosphate(STPP) in ceramic production process

The dilution of ceramic slurry requires both high solid content and good fluidity. Adding sodium tripolyphosphate(STPP) as dispersant can firmly adsorb the cracks of particles and penetrate deep into the cracks. The new interface formed in the process of particle grinding is quickly encapsulated by dispersant, which hinders the re-integration of the new interface and accelerates the grinding process, obviously shortens the grinding time, saves energy consumption and improves grinding efficiency.

In the absence of dispersant, particles are mainly affected by the following four forces in water: gravity, buoyancy, particles, water interfacial tension and interaction between particles, resulting in easy settling of particles and poor slurry stability; while sodium tripolyphosphate(STPP) is used as dispersant to adsorb on the surface of particles, the surface of the original particles is partially or totally covered by dispersant, which hinders the particles. Agglomeration can improve suspension and stability of slurry.
