Potassium formate drilling fluid becomes a “new darling” of gas fields with energy saving and environmental protection technology

During construction, the drill bit is optimized, the drilling parameters and hydraulic parameters are optimized, and the amount of drilling fluid is added according to the complexity of the downhole, the design and the formation. The potassium formate drilling fluid system has strong suppression and collapse prevention capabilities, excellent rheological sand-carrying performance and water loss reduction capability, reasonable cost, regular bore diameter, and low accident rate.
During normal drilling, the solid content and general content of the system are strictly controlled. Otherwise, the thickening effect is obvious, which leads to the difficulty of controlling the viscosity and shear in the later period. Small-scale experiments can be done on site to determine the solid content and general content suitable for this well.
The content of potassium formate in this system should not be less than 5% as much as possible to ensure its strong anti-collapse inhibition effect. Since the demand for K+ of montmorillonite is greater than that of illite, when drilling into formations with high montmorillonite content, the amount of potassium formate can be increased appropriately.
Using a polymer with coating inhibiting ability together with potassium formate, using the mechanism of synergistic anti-collapse, the effect is much better than using potassium formate alone.
Potassium formate and other polymer treatment agents should be added in the form of glue to avoid large fluctuations in drilling fluid performance.
During operation, the low temperature environment of seawater will cause the rise of drilling fluid viscosity, shear force, and poor rheology of the riser section, resulting in an increase in circulation equivalent density, which may cause lost circulation. In order to ensure the smooth implementation of drilling and achieve low-cost and efficient drilling, the use of potassium formate drilling fluid is particularly important.
