The EU approved feed additives potassium diformate and benzoic acid, which effect is better?

We all know that non-antibiotic feed additives are much earlier in foreign countries. The use of organic acids can not only improve the productivity of the breeding environment, but also have antibacterial and antibacterial effects. Among the non-antibiotic feed additives approved by the EU, which potassium diformate and benzoic acid are effective?

By comparing potassium diformate and benzoic acid, two non-antibiotic growth-promoting feed additives approved by the European Union, the following conclusions can be drawn:

1. Compared with all organic acids (salts) including benzoic acid, the advantage of potassium diformate is that it can significantly increase the feed intake of weaned piglets and lactating sows. The feed intake of piglets and sows decreases as the dose of benzoic acid increases (poor palatability). Potassium diformate has a positive effect on palatability even at higher levels due to the taste preference of pigs.

2. Based on the antibacterial properties of formic acid, formic acid is currently the best solution against gram-negative pathogens and some PH-sensitive gram-positive pathogens. Benzoic acid also has excellent antibacterial effects (slightly less effective than formic acid), and can also inhibit molds and yeasts. It is most suitable for feed preservatives (because the preservative effect of liquid preparations is better than that of solid forms). Therefore, diformate has a better effect on animals.

3. Obviously, the antibacterial effect for the latter part of the digestive system (where more harmful bacteria inhabit) is the most important. 70-80% of the active ingredient formic acid can reach here and play a role directly after the sustained release of diformate. Whereas pure benzoic acid or formate with less active ingredients can reach here, potassium diformate passes through the stomach without coating directly to the small intestine-duodenum to play a role. The study found that there is a complete recovery rate of formic acid of 85%. The effective ingredient retention rate of benzoic acid here is up to 25% (the reason is that its active ingredients are quickly absorbed in the front part of the digestive system. Unless the product itself has coating technology, the effective acid content after coating is correspondingly low) . Even if there are coated benzoic acid products, most of the benzoic acid can only enter the large intestine due to the destruction of the protective layer of fat in the small intestine, and the small intestine stage is where most kinds of harmful bacteria grow, which is where the fungicide is really needed. About 15% of the active ingredients in salt will also enter the large intestine and play a role.

With the development of modern animal nutrition in China, a large number of studies have found that potassium diformate not only plays a role in meeting the nutritional needs of animals, but also has the effect of improving the quality of livestock and poultry products and improving the immunity of animals.
